What’s the Difference Between Accredited and Non-Accredited Tech Education?
Is there room in the future for a tech education? Well, not really. In the present day and age, we have more people with jobs that require hands-on, technological skills, but no one is clamoring for teachers with degrees in computers or technology. But, what could happen if people with computer and tech skills were hired in higher-level positions? That’s the question some administrators wonder about. Here’s a short answer.
One possibility is for a college or technical school to offer a certificate course on computer and technology education. Such classes would typically have about three months of classroom time, plus additional lab time. Students would take the courses in order to receive computer skills associate’s degree, which is basically equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in computer science. Students could then go on to obtain a master’s degree or even a Ph.D. in this field, depending on their choice.
Just because such classes are offered doesn’t mean a tech education will necessarily be needed. For example, many state colleges and universities already offer courses in such areas as information systems, networking, and software engineering, so why not offer computer courses as well? That would surely attract students interested in the field. Some schools even have on-campus IT departments, which may be able to offer job placement upon graduation.
Still, that’s not enough. A person who seeks a career in the IT field would need some sort of certification after graduation. This would guarantee him or her the ability to find work in the field, although wages aren’t always high. A certificate program, however, would assure employers that the person has indeed received some type of training. There are several accredited programs available, so if you wanted to pursue such an education, you’d be able to find one to suit your needs.
It’s possible that some employers would actually prefer someone with some sort of tech education, even though such education wouldn’t directly apply to their particular needs. Employers generally want their employees to be tech experts – they’d rather hire someone who can think on their feet, as well as doing well in general. Therefore, an accredited education would be a definite plus in this regard, at least in the eyes of most potential employers. In fact, some companies actually require their employees to take an approved course, although this would vary depending on the company.
Before taking any tech education program, however, you should check out the program’s accreditation. Accredited programs mean that the school provides a solid education, and that it meets the standards set by certain industry groups. It is also a good idea to read a list of the accredited programs and compare them side-by-side to see which of them have the best rankings or to check out the details about the specific program. After all, if an institution isn’t accredited, it could spell trouble for your future.
